WASTE REGULATION CHANGES

WASTE ASSESSMENT AND CLASSIFICATION HAS BEEN REVISED SINCE 01 JUNE 2015

« Previous

Waste assessment and classification is set to change, are you ready?
The way that waste is assessed and classified has been revised since the 1st June 2015 and will result in several changes to the law. These changes will potentially affect businesses that produce waste, companies that collect, recycle, recover or dispose of waste, trade associations, brokers and consultants.

In short the changes include;

Amendments to the List of Waste (or European Waste Catalogue)
Significant revision of hazard codes to hazardous properties
Adjustment of thresholds relating to certain hazard properties
The adoption of a new chemical classification system

Why the changes? Well underpinning legislation has changed and now the CLP Classification Labelling and Packaging Regulation (CLP) (2008/1272/EC) which covers chemical classification and therefore waste classification. The List of Wastes has been reviewed too with R codes (Risk Phrases) being replaced with Hazard statements.

WM2’s successor ‘WM3’ is in the process of being drafted following a consultation period headed up by the Environment Agency, the summary of which will be displayed by 1st July 2015.
